How to choose a farm gate
October 10, 2025

At Southern Wire, we’ve been helping Australian farmers choose the right gates for decades. From tough cattle gates to safe horse gates, our range is built for Australian conditions and designed to stand the test of time. When choosing a farm gate it’s important to consider its size, strength and function.
Gate sizing
One thing to remember, is that gate sizing isn’t the same across Australia.
- In Western Australia, gates are made for the opening not the actual gate width. This means, a one metre gate is designed to fit a one metre opening and is actually slightly smaller to allow for hinges and latches.
- In the Eastern States (SA, VIC, NSW, QLD & NT), gates are measured by their actual width. A one metre gate is actually one metre wide.
Types of gates
The next thing to think about is the function of the gate. At Southern Wire, we have a range of gates to suit different applications.

Farm Gates – The classic all-rounder. Farm gates are ideal for general use around rural properties such as drive ways, boundaries, and laneways. Built for strength and durability, to handle everyday life on the farm.

Three bar horse gates – Specifically designed with safety in mind, three bar horse gates feature smooth surfaces, rounded corners and close bar spacing to prevent injury.

Mesh horse gates – These horse gates combine the safety of mesh with the structure of a traditional gate. The fine mesh prevents horses from rubbing or getting hooves caught.

Cattle gates – These are heavy duty gates designed to handle large livestock such as cattle. Built with heavy 32mmNB frames and thick rails for extra strength.

5 bar cattle gates – These feature solid bars for extra strength. Perfect for cattle yards, holding pens and anywhere that has extra pressure from cattle.

Vermin exclusion gates – Designed to be paired with vermin fencing, these gates are 1.6m high to keep out pests such as kangaroos, wild dogs and feral animals

Timber gates - Timber gates bring both functionality and classic rural style to your property. Made from ACQ-treated pine, Southern Wire timber gates are strong, durable, and naturally appealing. They’re ideal for driveways, entrances, or decorative fencing where appearance matters as much as practicality. Can be painted or stained to suit your property’s aesthetic.
Bracing styles
Not all gates are braced the same, with some styles stronger and rigid then others.

Vertical brace gates - features vertical braces through the centre of the gate. These gates are best for lighter applications and smaller openings.

Vee brace gates – this gate has a “V” shaped brace from the top corners to the bottom. This adds stability and strength and is commonly used in heavy duty gates.

N brace gates – An “N” shaped brace pattern provides excellent support and rigidness. This gate is ideal for larger openings and areas with livestock pressure.
