Fence Label Blog Cover

If you’ve ever shopped for rural or farm fencing, then it’s likely you have come across a product label that looks likes this – 7/90/30 400m.

At first glance, it might look like a random combination of numbers, but this label actually tells you everything you need to know about the fence. These numbers are a quick and easy way to identify the unique features of each roll of fence and helps you make your selection for your property.

Breaking down the label

1

First Number
The first number on the label tells you how many horizontal wires – or lines wires – run through the fence. For example, the 7 in 7/90/30 means there are 7 horizontal wires stacked from top to bottom in the fence.

2

Second Number
The second number on the label tells you how high the fence is in centimeters. In this case, the 90 in 7/90/30 means the fence is 90cm high.

3

Third Number
The third number on the label indicates the space between the vertical or picket wire. This is the wire that holds the line wires in place. The 30 in 7/90/30 means there are 30cm intervals between the vertical wires.

4

Fourth Number
The fourth number on the fencing label is the length of the entire role of fencing wire. In this example, 400m means that there is 400m of fencing on the roll. This makes it easy to calculate how many rolls you’ll need for your project.

Extra Details on the label

In addition to the main numbers, Southern Wire fencing labels include a few extra details to help you make the right choice:

Fence Knot - For example, this fence features the Griplock Fixed Knot - the strongest knot available.

Coating Type – Tells you if the product is Heavy Galvanised or our more premium Premier50, Zinc + Aluminium coating

Line Wire Diameter – By default these are 2.50mm unless noted otherwise, like the 2.80mm Top and Bottom wires on our Fastlock for example.

Product Code - Each product has a unique code, this fence’s code is 6307, so you can easily reorder the exact same fence if need be.

Weight - This roll weighs 188 kg. Knowing the weight helps with planning transport and handling—whether you’ll need machinery or an extra set of hands.

Finally, every Southern Wire product label also highlights that every one of our rolls is manufactured in Australia.
