Timber Farm Gates
Bring a classic country look to your driveway or paddocks without the weight and upkeep of hardwood. Southern Wire's timber farm gates are built from ACQ-treated pine (arsenic-free) for rot and termite resistance, with 90x70 mm side & top members and 21x70 mm slats/diagonals. A bolted, slotted-joinery + exterior-grade adhesive construction keeps the gate square and solid, while staying light enough to handle on site.
Choose from 3', 4', 5', 6', 8' or 10' widths as singles or pairs. Add our heavy-duty hinge kit and
latch and you're ready to hang. Prefer a dressed finish? Simply paint or stain once the timber has
seasoned for a premium estate look.
Key features
- ACQ-treated pine (arsenic-free): safer for families, stock and pets; resists rot & termites.
- Strong but manageable: 90x70mm stiles/top rail with 21x70mm slats/diagonals for a sturdy lighter gate than hardwood.
- Built to stay true: bolted + slotted joinery with exterior-grade adhesive for rigidity and sag resistance.
- Country-style aesthetic: timeless five-bar look suits rural and acreage properties.
- Hardware options that last: hot-dip galvanised (HDG) strap hinges with adjustable gudgeons.
- Automation-ready: compatible with Mighty Mule swing gate openers.
- Easy to finish: paint or stain after seasoning for UV/weather protection and the colour you want.
Not straight away. The ACQ treatment already protects the timber against rot and termites. However, it does not protect against sun and rain, so for the best long-term finish we recommend applying a quality exterior paint or water-based stain once the timber has had time to season (dry out).
Allow a few weeks of dry weather. A good test is to splash some water on the timber – if it soaks in rather than beads on the surface, the gate is ready to coat.
ACQ stands for Alkaline Copper Quaternary. It’s a modern, arsenic-free timber treatment that’s pressure-impregnated into the wood. It protects against rot, fungi, and termites, making the gate safe for families, pets, and stock.
Each gate is built using a combination of bolts, slotted joinery, and exterior-grade adhesive. This prevents sagging and ensures the gate stays square and rigid.
- 3'–4' gates: Single diagonal brace (Z-brace)
- 5'–6' gates: Cross brace (X-brace)
- 8'–10' gates: Double cross brace (XX-brace) for extra stability
Yes. They are compatible with most swing gate openers, including our Mighty Mule range. Just make sure you use strong posts and correct hinge positions.
We recommend using heavy-duty strap hinges and adjustable gudgeons. Hinge kits and latches are available as accessories.
Add together the widths of both gates plus a small clearance for hinges and latches. For example, two 5' gates will cover approximately 3.05 m plus hinge/latch clearances.
- Rinse dust and salt build-up occasionally.
- Inspect hinges annually and lubricate if needed.
- Touch up paint or stain as required.
- Keep the bottom rail out of constant wet soil for longer life.
